Augustin Binya performed one of the most classless moves I have ever seen in my years of watching sports. Not just football, but in baseball, American football, basketball and hockey included.
The Benfica player came in on a challenge with Scott Brown and looked completely uninterested in doing anything but harming the Celtic midfielder.
I tried to find the video online for those that haven’t seen it yet, but I couldn’t – and while I feel bad to not have it for those that have missed it – I don’t think I could watch it again without getting fiercely angry all over again.
Binya looked like he was trying to break Brown’s leg. In fact, I don’t know how he didn’t do more damage – the best news from it is that Brown should be okay and back playing with the Hoops this weekend.
I’m not alone in thinking that Binya was going for the maximum injury he could inflict on Brown. When asked about Binya trying to break his leg, Brown responded with this:
Yes, I think he did, but I want to fight another day. Hopefully Uefa will deal with it properly. The referee dealt with it very well and sent him off right away.
The ref did do a good job of catching the coward in his act giving him an immediate red. Now it’s up to Uefa to review the play and give Binya the harshest, fiercest penalty it could ever imagine.
There is no place for his actions in football – no place at all and if Uefa wants to make a statement against this sort of thing – they need to do that here.
Uefa needs to think of the harshest possible penalty they can hit Binya with – and then add five games to it.
